What is TIPD?
Tertiary Initiatives for People with Disabilities (TIPD) is a joint project of the eight publicly funded universities in Queensland.
TIPD targets issues related to students with a disability. It develops:
- outreach programs for students with a disability who demonstrate academic potential and a desire to undertake tertiary study
- improved infrastructure initiatives for students with a disability within universities
- strategies to enhance access to employment for university graduates with a disability.
TIPD began operation in 1991 and is currently funded to July 1999.
TIPD is one of the cooperative projects that operates in each state. It is funded by the Higher Education Equity Programs of the Department of Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs.TIPD Operations
TIPD employs a Project Manager and project officers to implement its programs, with administrative support. A management committee, consisting of representatives from each of the participating universities and graduates with a disability, develops annual plans and oversights the projects.
What Is Its Purpose?
The aim of the Project is to enhance the access of academically qualified people with a disability to higher education and appropriate graduate employment.
TIPD is not funded to provide direct services to university students, but seeks instead to foster inter-institutional cooperation in the development of policies and services related to students with a disability.Guiding Principles
- All participating institutions are involved in and benefit from work undertaken.
- Appropriate policies, practices and procedures are embedded into the mainstream of institutional and agency activities.
- Programs focus on developmental work and issues identified as impacting on successful entry to, and participation in, university study.
- Closer liaison is sought with organisations concerned with post-secondary education, and with university and community personnel working with students with a disability.
