at the Australian Maritime College

A student with a physical disability, which affected her ability to write for prolonged periods of time, contacted the College prior to enrolment. She was accepted into the Course and, after discussion with the Student Support Unit, a series of adjustments were negotiated with the Course Coordinator and members of the teaching staff.

These adjustments included:

  • permission to record lectures

  • use of an ergonomic chair

  • copies of available notes and diagrams

  • use of the computer in examinations

In the examination situation, a lap-top computer was provided for the student. In all other respects, the examination conditions were the same as for other students. The student answered the examination questions using a word processing package and saved the work on a disk which was handed to the examiner at the end of the session. The other students were aware of and understood the need for this adjustment, which was acceptable to the staff and the student involved.
