at TAFE Tasmania

Jenny, a person with a visual impairment, wished to enrol part time in a community service related certificate course. The teacher, initially concerned about the students ability to meet the requirements of the course, contacted the Disability Liaison Officer (DLO) to seek further advice. The DLO and teacher discussed a range of potentially useful teaching strategies and arranged a meeting with Jenny to determine her individual requirements.

Jenny and her teacher collectively worked out how she could access information in the course and ways to demonstrate her achievement of the learning outcomes. The teacher agreed to provide Jenny with course materials in advance and on computer disk to allow her the extra time she needed to assimilate the information. She was also to be granted extended deadlines for the completion of assignments. The DLO arranged for the loan of the assistive computer equipment Jenny required and for assistance from library staff.

The DLO maintained contact with both the student and the teacher concerned in order to monitor the success of the strategies that had been put in place to assist Jenny.
